Two of the STEMgirls advisors, Kelly Tatham (left) and Laura Downes, ran workshops on chromatography during the ‘Girls into Engineering’ event at the University of Northampton on 14 July 2010. They demonstrated high-pressure liquid chromatography and explained the principles to groups of around 12 school girls.
The feedback from the event was very positive, and the girls also learned about a wide range of engineering jobs currently fulfilled by women. A very enjoyable and worthwhile day.
Thanks to Laura and Kelly for their time and effort!

I’m a year 10 student (aged 15) in London who is interested in mechanical engineering and working with cars. I was informed about a WISE work experience, but it is at the same time as exams so I can’t attend. I really want to find some work experience to do with my career interests.
Can anyone help me with finding some or give me advice on how to pursue my search for work experience?
Thanks very much.

I’m interested in aeronautics. However I don’t know how much work experience I will need to become a good engineer. I am in year 10 at Loughborough High and I have been informed about a engineering work experience weeks with the RAF in Birmingham for girls in year 10. However I have a public examination in these week so I cannot go. I’m worried that I may have very slim chances of getting any work experience at all. Please may I have some advice on how I should go forward? Thank you.

Hello, I am currently undertaking a P/T BSc.(Hons) Life Sciences with the Open University, and am doing well at Level 2. I have a BSc. Psych (2001)from Stirling University. I am 30 yrs old and live in Glasgow City Centre. I have no related work experience, but would love to pursue a career as a researcher. I am particularly interested in Biological Psychology. I’d like some advice on related careers, and where I should begin to gain experience. I am happy to volunteer, ideally in a university, yet I am unsure who to approach, and in what capacity I would realistically be considered.

I am currently studying an environmental course with the Open University. It is only a one year course with certificate. I would like to ask if there is any possibility for me to start working in the subject of environment. Because I do not have a degree, I do not expect any research or studies… simply some job at least a little bit connected with environment, ecology…
Thank you,
Marketa

I am currently awaiting my MSc results, having previously done an MSc in Biotechnology. I have also completed two years voluntary work in IARI, pusa, New Delhi- a research Institute where I was a Head Research Fellow. I am now looking for a further opportunity, such as a PhD or work placement, which can make my career go ahead.
I came across your website through University student development zone, and would like to know where I can get hands on skills or placements in industry, and whether there are any schemes within the NHS that are open to international students?

I am finishing my Masters in Plant Science with a specialisation in plant breeding.
I am interested in getting moving into a career with an emphasis in plant research or crop improvement. I am currently working as a science teacher.
I am interested in obtaining information on:
(1) where there are regular openings in the area of Plant Breeding or related plant research work.
(2) links to online groups that include personnel in this area
(3) what additional skill sets (eg a certificate in Project Management) are employers eager to see potential candidates possess.

Hello,
I am a graduate chemist and a mother. I was a mother when I graduated and decided to stay at home and raise my family after graduation. Now as my family has grown and my youngest child has now entered full time school I would like to return to science but I am not sure where to look for help.
Is their anyone who is/ has been in a similar situation that can give me any information?

I am currently working as a research technician in the energy industry and I’m looking to move into engineering. Unfortunately all I can find is routes in through BTECs HND’s and so forth, but because I’m older than 19 I am not eligible for these qualifications. Is there any other way?
