I just wanted to know what sort of work you do in a day? Also was the technician post a plan B if you did not get into the programme? As I am also looking for a plan B just in case I wont be able to make it. Thank you very much for your time.

My scientist life started when I was in Year 7 at school in Reading and our sweet old science teacher told us about atoms. From then on I always had to know more! I studied as much science as humanly possible at school, did A levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology (I now wish I had done Further Maths as well!) and then set off for Cambridge, one of 5 from my selective state school to make it to Oxbridge. At Cambridge I started off the Natural Sciences course definitely wanting to be a physicist, so I chose Physics, Maths, Chemistry and something called Materials Science to fill up the other timetable slot. As the first year progressed and I found out how much more maths I should already have known, I turned off Physics but found myself quite taken by this Materials Science lark. So that’s what I chose to specialise in for my final year, and then my masters project supervisor offered me a PhD to carry on my project and I thought why not, it sounds like fun.

So then I did a PhD. Here’s a quick summary…a lot of stuff (metal, rocks, etc) is made of crystals where the atoms are packed in a regular pattern, like oranges at the greengrocer. Here and there in the crystal you find bits where the atoms aren’t stacked properly and it’s the shape and behaviour of these defects that decide basically how most properties work for that material. It turns out you can actually see these defects as bright lines if you take a little bit of a material and put it in an electron microscope (google that, it’s awesome). So my PhD was to put samples in the microscope and then turn them round while taking pictures, do a lot of data processing and then you get a 3D model of where the defects are (defect/dislocation tomography), like when they do an MRI scan to get a 3D picture of somebody’s brain. And we were the first people in the world to do that for crystal defects in an electron microscope. This sounds quite easy when it’s one paragraph but I’ve missed out the bits where I threw things at the wall after everybody had gone home. But, I got the PhD in the end and it was worth it. Things I learned: if somebody tells you something’s too difficult, it’s probably the right thing to do. If you don’t get up in the morning, go to work in the afternoon. Never attempt teaching without tea. And, I have caught up with maths a bit more now.

Now I have a research job at Sheffield University where I have learned to do a whole other method of electron microscopy (EELS) based around measuring the energy of transmitted electrons that got scattered as they went through the sample, to find out about how the sample’s bonds and electron states were set up. I’m using this to help a research group in ceramics to develop materials that will make better batteries
and electronic components, which will hopefully help us build better technology for renewable energy, among other things. My days mostly consist of processing data and drinking tea, and occasionally spending the day on the microscope collecting more data, or waiting for microscopes to get fixed. And a not insignificant amount of surfing
the internet. I’d say my field of research is maybe 70-80% men but they’re mostly quite nice and I never have to queue for the toilet at conferences. Though they do eat all the ham sandwiches if you’re not quick.

When I’m not in a dark lab looking at a little green microscope screen, I like to go kayaking (see picture; all the pics at work have me looking half asleep or quite goofy), look after my garden, hang around with my friends and make clothes. Also, I throw less things.

I am currently a year 12 female student and am considering applying to university to study Biochemistry. The university suggest having work experience related to the course before applying, but so far I have been unable to organise a placement as Biochemical companies have been uncooperative. I live in Northumberland and am willing to travel to get this opportunity, but I would prefer it to be local. Would you be able to suggest whether there are any work experience that I could apply for? Or any voluntary placements that is related to biochemistry that is avaliable? Any further suggestions would be grateful.

Dear STEM,

I’m 16 years of age and am currently finishing my GCSE’s. I’m very interested in finding out more about the different careers available in the medical and engineering sectors. I am planning to study Biology, Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Geography (I have currently predicted A* GCSE’s in all these subjects) at AS level and I would highly appreciate the opportunity to gain some work experience in these fields. I was wondering if you offered, or could help me find, some work experience for medicine or engineering in the North East anytime from 20th June through until the end of August. I would love to be able to see the working enviroment and be able to understand more about the career paths I aspire to go down and hopefully this work experience will help me discover a larger pull to either medicine or engineering. Any help you could give me would be amazing and I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your consideration,

Kind regards,

Caitlin
